Gesa Credit Union thinks $20,000 is just the start.
Last spring TPS and Gesa launched a partnership that includes an affinity debit card program and a physical credit union branch in Mount Tahoma. Through the Gesa Affinity Debit Card Program TPS offers district and school-branded debit cards. When Gesa account holders use a linked card, each card swipe delivers a donation to our schools at no cost to the card user. Earlier this week, TPS received the first donation totaling $20,000.
“It’s exciting to bring this donation,” said Gesa Education Support Specialist, Evan Buelt. “It shows how our partnership is already working to support Tacoma students. We’re confident this program will continue to grow, and the next check will be even larger.”
“Financial literacy and knowledge are critical to student’s succeeding after graduation,” said Board President Lisa Keating. “This partnership is removing barriers for students and giving them the ability to learn with guidance and support. And the financial donation allows us to keep growing and investing in programs that support students.”
Partnership off to a strong start
Since the launch over 100 people have signed up to participate in the Gesa Affinity Debit Card Program. TPS is starting with branded cards for our five comprehensive high schools and a TPS card. Depending on demand, more card designs may be added.
In addition to banking access, Gesa provides job opportunities for students. The Mount Tahoma credit union branch is part of Gesa’s High School Credit Union Program which works with schools across Washington. During the school year trained students help to run the Mount Tahoma branch. Throughout the summer, Mount Tahoma junior Melody Ciccia has worked at Gesa’s Tacoma branch, gaining valuable work experience and earning an income.
Mount Tahoma branch will continue in the 2024-2025 school year
When the school starts in September, the Mount Tahoma branch will once again be open during select lunches to serve Mount Tahoma students and staff (it is not open to the public). Students can open a checking account at any Gesa branch, including the Mount Tahoma branch. The student accounts include safeguards such as no overdraft fees or check writing, while also providing incentives for students to learn about finances.
In Washington state, kids over 14 can open bank accounts without parental permission. However, parental involvement is an important component for TPS and Gesa. The Mount Tahoma branch has materials for students to take home and discuss with their families. Additionally, Gesa has provided materials at Foss, Lincoln, Silas and Stadium High Schools.
During the 2024-2025 school year, Kelsey White, Gesa Education Specialist, will continue as the Mount Tahoma branch manager. And through the Jobs 253 program, students will have the opportunity to work alongside White as tellers.
Before beginning work, student tellers participate in training with Gesa, learning about banking rules and practices and Gesa systems. Student tellers have limited access within Gesa’s system, safeguarding member safety and privacy.
